Antietam Creek Canoe - Directions from Washington. Take I 270 North. At Frederick pick up I 70 (west). (if you stay in the right lanes, I 270 turns into I 70) Follow I 70 pass the Rt. 340 turn off, take the Middletown, Braddock Heights exit (#49) where you pick up Alt 40 west, by turning left at the exit ramp light. Follow Alt 40 over Braddock Mountain through Middletown over South Mountain and through Boonsboro. Take a left at Rt 68 [there's an Exxon station on the right, just before the turn; our antique shop is straight ahead on the left about half of a mile in the old AUCTION SQUARE building, but don't go there now] Follow rt. 68 about 3 miles. The first creek you cross is Beaver Creek. Antietam Creek is on your left. When you cross Antietam Creek (the second bridge on Rt 68 - it's the same one Jackson used), take an immediate left into our gravel parking area. We're right across the street from the Devil's Backbone Park. The whole trip from Washington is 50 Very pretty miles from the Beltway.
From the North, take I 70 to MD rt. 65, Sharpsburg Pike. Go South on 65 about 5 miles to Md. Rt. 68. Take a left on Rt. 68. (check out St Marks church [1840's] It's along the way on your right. It looks like Andrew Wyath painted it there and forgot to take it with him when he left) Follow 68 about 2 miles till you hit the Creek. Our drive is at the Creek, on the right, before you cross the bridge.
If you get lost ask for directions to Devil's Backbone.
