Washington DC waterfront trip: [pictures are Thumbs]

We run this trip with Canoe Kayak and paddle Company [CKAPCO] using their Top of the line sea kayaks and gear or our Tandem Canoes.

Start at Columbia Island Marina in the shadow of the Pentagon. Tides and wind dictate the route. But typically we paddle out onto the Potomac under the stone arch bridge that frames a panorama from beyond Washington's Monument to Jefferson's and the Tidal Basin in-between; adorned sometimes with Cherry Blossoms and no traffic. Washington Cathedral, Georgetown's Spires and the Capital are a fitting backdrop. We cross the river to the Tidal Basin gates and turn upstream Past Lincoln's Memorial & Bridge. Looking left are Arlington Cemetery and the Stately Lee-Custis Mansion giving way to mushrooming Rosslyn. It's around 11:00 when we pass the Kennedy Center and Watergate on route to Rock Creek and the beginning or end of the C&O Canal depending on your point of view. Not many folks believe that you can paddle right up Rock Creek into the backyard of the 4 Seasons Hotel at Mass Ave. and M Street.

We take a break here, have a snack then make a big loop up the dynamic Georgetown waterfront under Key bridge past the 1890's boat houses;m then over to Roosevelt Island, lunch and hike into the Monument.

If the tides are right, We make our way back to the marina by way of the Boundary Channel, an unlikely swampy flat with lots of wildlife and a strangely different atmosphere than the trip out. On the way is a must photo op that shows off well....here     Wow what a day and it's only 3 o'clock!

The cost of this trip is $72 as a stand alone trip. Or $65 if combined with any other class or trip. Many folks combine this trip with a Seneca Creek / Easy white water trip which gives some perspective to the versatility of Washington's Potomac and what a fabulous asset the C&O Canal provides. If time and energy permit we end the Seneca trip with a short drive and hike into Great Falls.

Give us a call. Trips for early 2008 - 5/11, 5/26, 6/12
