The Best (highly biased opinion)

Hagen's Tavern, on the way back to Wash & Balt. half way down the Mountain from Braddock Heights on the left. Not cheap but nice food, drinks and atmosphere.
South Mountain Inn. City Spendy for up here but nice place, good food, right on the top of South Mountain.
Shepardstown, Bavarian Inn, Yellow Brick Bank and many small fun attractive eateries. It's a college town and outfitted accordingly.
Breakfast & Small Town Eats
- Crawford's Confectionery right in Boonsboro. A real taste of small town America. Get a BLT and a box of shells & tags for the Bluetick.
- Subway [used to be Main Street Diner] right across the street from Crawfords. Two doors up is a bar/coffee house with OK food...I can't remember the name. There's a pizza shop right there as well.
- Red Byrd, Keedysville on the way to Sharpsburg. Sausage gravy over the whole plate. You'll be in heaven even if it doesn't kill you
- Boon's Family Restaurant in Middletown, right on the main drag .
- Cindy D, on rt. 340 on the way to Harper's Ferry. The boater's meeting place
  [ also hells angles, bird watchers of America, American legion etc.]
ICE CREAM - In Boonsboro. Right around the corner on RT. 34 next to the post office is Potomac Confections they have huge cones - The Cream sickle swirl in a waffle cone is super.
Ice cream - Sharpsberg, Nutters, right on town Square.
