CKAPCO at Antietam Creek, same as Antietam Creek Canoe

Mailing address: 19005 Lappans Road - Boonsboro, Maryland 21713  (Lappans road is MD Rt. 68 - which is the old National Pike. A few years back Gen. Jackson marched his troops across the neat old three arch stone bridge on our place to get on to capturing Harper's Ferry. That was a busy day I'll tell ya what.)

Phone: at the Mill (usually an answering machine)  Cell phone .
240 447 0444 or Home Phone 301 .942 1793 Kensington [best off season # prior to 8AM and after 8PM} . Because of travel and trips never rely on a answering machine to get something done. You need to talk to a real human being!

E-Mail ckapco@antietamcreek.com or paddle@antietamcreek.com Web Page www.antietamcreek.com  note this web site relates only to Antietam Creek Canoe activities. The main CKAPCO web site is www.ckapco.com .

Antietam Creek Canoe, or CKAPCO at Antietam Creek - Directions from Washington. Take I 270 North. At Frederick pick up I 70 (west). (if you stay in the right lanes, I 270 turns into I 70) Follow I 70  past the Rt. 340 turn off, to the Middletown, Braddock Heights exit (#49) where you pick up Alt 40 west, by turning left at the exit light. Follow Alt 40 through Middletown over South Mountain and through Boonsboro. Take a left at Rt. 68; there's an Exxon station on the right, just before the turn; [our antique shop is straight ahead 3/4 mi., on alt.40 on the left,  in the old AUCTION SQUARE building] Follow rt. 68 about 3 miles. The first creek you cross is Beaver Creek. Antietam Creek is on your left. When you cross Antietam Creek (the second bridge on Rt. 68 - it's the same one Jackson used), take an immediate left into our gravel parking area. We're right across the street from the Devil's Backbone Park. The whole trip from Washington is 50 Very pretty miles from the Beltway.

From the North, take I 70  to MD rt. 65, Sharpsburg Pike. Go South on 65 about 5¾ miles to Md. Rt. 68. Take a left on Rt. 68. (check out St Marks church [1840's]  It's along the way on your right. It looks like Andrew Wyath painted it there and forgot to take it with him when he left). Follow 68 about 2 miles till you hit the Creek. Our drive is at the Creek, on the right, before you cross the bridge.

If you get lost ask for directions to Devil's Backbone.

Directions to Burnside Bridge Takeout : From the "Mill" : Left out of the driveway. about 2 miles to rt 65.  Left on 65. At the stop sign in Sharpsburg [I'm guessing it's about 7 miles] go straight [rt 65 turns into Burnside Bridge Road] *in about a mile you cross the creek on a modern bridge. Up a long grade then down till you see the creek on your right. Parking is along the shoulder on your left or in a small dirt spot on the right that holds about 2 cars.

From Boonsboro Alt rt 40: Take a left [or WEST] on rt. 34 go to Sharpsburg. Take the first left [There's a Green trimmed Gas station on the left corner] to Burnside Bridge Rd. then same as above*.

Directions to Potomac Takeout from the Mill : Left out of driveway about 2 miles. Left on Rt. 65. Right at the stop sign in Sharpsburg. Then left at the first street which is Mechanics Street and later turns into Harpers Ferry Road. Follow that to Canal Road on your right [ I'm guessing its about 5 miles. ] If you hit the creek at H.F.R. Bridge you went too far. Turn around and take the first left which is Canal. The take out is where Canal Rd takes a sharp right. There is also a "Loading Circle" on your left. [There is no access or parking at the old H.F.R. Bridge, the neighbors saw one too many naked paddler in their front yard....... lack of discretion kills a lot of great take outs.

Directions to Seneca Creek Riley's Lock and Violette's Lock Areas:

Directions to Violet's Lock and Riley's Lock [Potomac]:
Beltway in either direction to River Rd, exit 39. Follow River Rd. North  about 11 miles. Violets Lock Rd is on your left. If you go too far, River Rd. dead ends [comes to a "T"] at Seneca Rd. Turn around and go back about 1/5 mile to Violet's. It will now be the first turn on your right. If you take a left at the "T"  with Seneca Rd. in about 1/3 mile you come to Riley's Lock Rd. on your left. Follow that left until it ends at the Potomac where there is a parking area. Note that River Rd. parallels the Potomac. Any road to the West gets you to the river. On your left as you go the 11 miles to Violet's you pass: Seven Locks Rd.[ which takes you very close to Carderock & Anglers], Falls Rd. in Potomac which takes you to Great Falls and Anglers, Swains Lock , Penny field Lock , then Violet's ,Then Riley's.

More Directions to Riley's Lock Road 1305 Riley's Lock Rd Poolesville MD 20837

1. Take River Road (Rt. 190) off rt. 495 through Potomac cross Falls Rd. and go 7 more miles to the intersection with Seneca Road (Rt. 112).
2. It's a "T" intersection and River Road takes a 90 degree left at this intersection. Take that left.
3. Then Take your next left onto Riley's Lock Road, the creek will be on your right and follow to almost the end...A parking lot on your left immediately across from the boat ramp.
